Onward and upward in 2022

So how many of you have been making plans as to how to grow your business further over the next 12 months? I always like to start the new year with a few goals laid out, both professional and personal, as I find having a rough plan really pushes me to do more than I perhaps otherwise would. 2021 saw me become an Accredited PR Practitioner with the UK Chartered Institute of Public Relations and was awarded Chartered Linguist status by the UK Chartered Institute of Linguists. I also successfully completed CPD cycles with both institutes.

As a chartered practitioner, I am obliged to complete regular CPD so as to demonstrate that I am continuously developing and updating my skills across the fields of PR, media, communications, language and translation. I have a few ideas as to steps I can take this coming year, the first of which involves mentoring. I’d like to do more to encourage young people to study languages and to use their language skills in fields that extend further than teaching. Having worked in motorsport for almost twenty years now, I have found people are always very interested to hear about what it is I do, and what led me down this path in the first place. I’m very keen to promote the fields in which I work and encourage recent graduates, particularly female graduates, to think outside the box and open themselves up to all kinds of opportunities. I recently wrote about my work in an industry publication and have now been invited to talk about my career path as part of a UK government initiative (more to follow!), but I’d also like to get more involved in initiatives at my former universities.

I’ve just recently completed a very useful subtitling course at UCL and, shortly before that, a psychology course. Having focused more on the language side of things recently, I’m now keen to update my public relations skills and am planning to undertake a diploma course offered by the CIPR. The intention would be to then apply this knowledge to my work in the international racing world. The pandemic has kept me away from the tracks for too long now, and I’ve been forced to work entirely from home, but I am hopeful that I can attend at least some events in person this coming season.

Another given, at least for me as a bookworm, is to keep up with the latest trends and developments by reading industry publications and the latest marketing and language/linguistics texts. And I find I am much more willing to deep dive into this kind of material if I’m encouraged to do so as part of a course, hence the ongoing desire to study! And if I can get all this done, then I’ll have no problems completing my 2022 CPD cycle as a result. Win-win.
